The TRAINOR Center

Fact Sheet

The Need

One in four Americans has a psychiatric diagnosis, most often an anxiety disorder. In most cases, their symptoms started in childhood or adolescence. Sometimes, anxiety disorders go unrecognized and untreated in children. Unfortunately, the failure to treat these disorders early in life leads to increased rates of severe anxiety disorders, depression, and substance abuse. In addition, children who experience significant anxiety are at great risk of under-performing academically, becoming socially isolated, and missing out on important developmental experiences.

At the TRAINOR Center, we specialize in treatments for the growing incidences of anxiety disorders. We recognize the importance of early intervention, which leads to the prevention of more serious problems. Offering targeted, sensitive care for the whole family, we practice Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with children, adolescents, parents, and siblings. We also work individually with college students and adults experiencing anxiety.

The Book

Dr. Kathleen Trainor’s book, Calming Your Anxious Child: Words to Say and Things to Do , featuring her 7-Step Method, the first clear, user-friendly approach that guides parents and their anxious youngsters in a systematic manner.

Calming Your Anxious Child presents practical, supportive, and beneficial strategies in helping children overcome fears. While other books offer general tips, the few that offer specific tools require onerous worksheets that often overwhelm the parents and children who try them. Calming Your Anxious Child is presented in an easy-to-read format that shares the stories of parents and anxious children who have suffered from a variety of anxiety disorders. The parents’ and children’s voices help readers identify and see they’re not alone. The book also offers specific chapters for separation anxiety, selective mutism, social anxiety, hair pulling, OCD, and other common types of anxiety that have their own challenges. Included is the latest information on brain research.
